The children of Senegal…

In Siné-Saloum, we went to visit a very poor village called Maya. When we arrived by dinghy, the children rushed to accompany us into the village, holding our hands. Instead of taking our whole hand in theirs, they took 1 finger each so that the others could also take a finger! They were either cute or had a snotty nose.

We visited Maya’s school where there were only 5 books, a few pencils, 7 sheets of paper… that’s it! We also saw the only well there was, and it was “Swiss Made”!

At Niou-moune (pronounced New-Moon), in Casamance, we were invaded by children (all boys) who had come in pirogues carved out of ceiba trees (fromager in french, which comes from the words “form-agé”) to visit the boat. We showed them the binoculars, and they loved it! After that, we were able to go ashore in the boys’ pirogues!
